Charles Leclerc wins the 2022 Australian Grand Prix ahead of Perez and Russell

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc wins the 2022 Australian Grand Prix from the Pole position ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez in P2 and Mercedes’ George Russell in P3. 2021 World Champion Max Verstappen and Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz retired from the race along with four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel in Aston Martin.

It was Charles Leclerc who stole the show today at the newly modified Albert Park track in Melbourne, Australia. The Monegasque picked up his second win of the season in a dominant passion, he led the whole race from pole position and survived two safety car re-starts. He also picked up an extra point for the fastest lap of the race.

The Driver of the Day winner finishes the race over +20.524 seconds ahead of second-place man Sergio Perez. During Post-race interview Leclerc praised his car and thanked Ferrari for giving him a very strong and reliable car.

What a car today. This weekend, race pace, we were extremely strong, the tyres felt great. I’m just so happy. Incredible to win here. We are only at the third race, so it is difficult to think about the championship but we have a very strong car, a reliable one too. It’s great to be back in this position., said the 2022 Australian Grand Prix winner Charles Leclerc of Ferrari.

Sergio Perez drove a solid race to come home in P2 for Red Bull after his teammate picked up the second DNF in three races. Reliability is becoming a big concern for Milton Keynes based team.

The start was a bit tricky, Lewis overtook me, he braked late and had a good Turn 1. My first stint was poor with degradation but the hard, the Safety Car – we were unlucky and we lost Max.” said the Mexican during the post-race interview with former Red Bull driver and Australian Mark Webber.

Mercedes showed an impressive race pace in Australia after struggling in the first two races of the season. But like Bahrain, they got lucky to stand on the podium, even Geroge Russell admitted that during the post-race interview.

We got a little bit lucky today twice, but we’ll take it. There’s so much hard work going on to get us back. We are never going to give up, we were a long way behind and yet here we are, on the podium. If anyone can, Mercedes can.” said Rusell after picking up the first podium for Mercedes.

Russell’s teammate and seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton come home in P4 ahead of McLaren pair Lando Norris in P5 and Daniel Ricciardo in P6. Esteban Ocon finishes the race in P7 ahead of Bottas in P8 & Gasly in P9

A penultimate corner lock-up on Lap 54 saw AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly drop from P8 to P9, while Valtteri Bottas gained an extra place to take P8 having started 12th. The Alfa Romeo driver capitalised on Gasly’s mistake, Sainz’s retirement and a difficult race for Fernando Alonso (P17 after a late pit stop for fastest lap).

One of a handful to start on hards, Alex Albon stopped late before claiming P10 to give Williams a deserved first point of 2022. Zhou Guanyu had a solid 58-lap journey from P14 to P11, missing out on the final point by a whisker to the wily Williams of Albon ahead.
