Alpine reveals 2022 Challenger ‘A522’

BWT Alpine F1 Team officially unveiled its new challenger ‘A522’ today in Paris, ahead of the long-awaited start of the 2022 FIA Formula World Championship season.

The A522 keeps a superb Alpine blue color, now associated with the emblematic pink of BWT, recently announced as the title partner of the team in 2022. BWT Alpine F1 Team also created the surprise by lifting the veil on a decoration “ reversed” where pink is the main color.

This unique livery will be used for the first two races of the calendar in order to highlight the collaboration with the title partner BWT. The presentation of the second F1 car in the history of BWT Alpine F1 Team was made by Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine, Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group, and Otmar Szafnauer, new team director.

Drivers Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso were also present to unveil this highly anticipated A522. This new-look team will aim for further progress in 2022 after Alpine’s first strong campaign in Formula 1 last year.

Enstone’s technical departments will now be led by the experienced duo of Chassis Technology Director Pat Fry and Technical Director Matt Harman. On the other side of the Channel, Alpine recently appointed Bruno Famin as Executive Director of Alpine Racing in Viry-Châtillon in order to optimize the integration between the chassis and the engine while ensuring the transfer of innovations from the track to the road.

An Alpine Academy graduate, Australian Oscar Piastri will be the team’s official reserve driver in 2022 after winning the FIA Formula 2 Championship title last year. Esteban and Fernando will take the wheel of the A522 for a day of filming tomorrow at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya before starting pre-season testing later in the week.

Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine:

“It is with great pleasure that we present today our A522 marking the new chapter of Alpine’s adventure in Formula 1. We are proud competitors and we have put all the essence, the heritage and the passion of Alpine in this new generation. We have a clear plan and vision in place at Alpine and we can count on some of the best people in our field to move forward and achieve our ambitions.

Our team is now solid and hopefully future-proof. Our driver duo is the perfect recipe to help us achieve the results we aim for on the track. In 2022, we want to show steady progress with full developments across all venues to ensure we become future title contenders. We are heading in the right direction and we want to continue our ascent to the heights.

Fernando Alonso, BWT Alpine F1 Team driver:

“It’s nice to be back and I’ve worked hard to be ready for this season. There has been a lot of expectation with the regulatory revolution delayed due to the pandemic. The car looks fantastic with these new regulations and I like the new livery.

We have a new engine and we are confident that we have good developments in place for this new generation. We won’t know the hierarchy before Bahrain, but we can’t wait to do our first laps with the A522 this week in testing. I hope that the new regulations will achieve their objective with ever more competitive and exciting races this year.

Esteban Ocon, BWT Alpine F1 Team driver:

“Of course I’m very enthusiastic when I discover the A522, but I’m even more so at the idea of driving it for the first time this week. It’s always a privilege to get behind the wheel of a new F1 as you know all the work that has been done behind the scenes by all the talented people from our different departments in Enstone and Viry-Châtillon. This feeling and responsibility is truly unique and special. I’m ready, I feel physically sharp, so get on track to see what we can achieve this year!
